Using Pinterest is great way for churches and individuals to share photos, scripture and encouragement. But verses taken out of context just bug the heck out of me…especially when it is “self” focused message. I am fearless, I have worth, I can’t fail, I’m victorious, etc, etc.
For an example, take a look at the verse on the graphic on the right, taken from Psalm 46. Here it is in context.
God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.
4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.
5 God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day.
Clearly the passage is talking about “her”…Israel…the city of God. But someone took the passage and made a graphic with an out of context “girl empowerment” statement. While a popular message culturally, it is a dangerous one. The focus of scripture is GOD, HIS work, HIS love and HIS grace to sinful man. While there are many “therefore” statements that apply to us…many of the popular Old Testament promises are for Israel and many of the popular New Testament ones are taken out of context and twisted to mean something else.
There is enough confusion about what the Bible says. Please don’t use social media to further confuse people that need to hear the true gospel message.
